A day after my family and I arrived in Texas we packed up and headed to New Mexico to go camping in the mountains from Thursday night to Saturday. It's a really neat place to go- you literally go from dessert to forests in a matter of seconds. It reminded us all of home {Colorado, that is}. It had been a great number of years since we had been camping, so this was enjoyed by all of us!
There were plenty of adventures- from a smoke filled camper to dad being returned to us by a game warden...
and I took lots of pictures, what a surprise, I know :)
we spent lots of time around the campfire
we had beautiful evenings lit by the bright moon and starry skies... which made for wonderful walks through the dark woods.
our campsite...you may have read {this post} by my sister about "The Little House on the Back of the Truck" which is where we stayed while we were camping...
...well most of us that is...dad slept one night out under the stars.
we had so many delicious meals made over the campfire. That was definitely a highlight {as always} for each one of us...
{taters frying in a cast iron over the fire}
{biscuits in the dutch oven |before|}
{our traditional campfire breakfast of eggs,sausage,potato,and onion}
{biscuits |after|}
ok...I'm done with food...for now.
We took so many walks and the scenery was just beautiful. Pines all over growing up to the sky and ridges dotted with tall, white aspens...high peaks and wide open valleys...such a wonderful place to get alone with the Lord!
{Hanny the great adventure dog}
I do believe I get my {adventure} side of me from my dad and his side of the family. We definitely both love to be out adventuring in the woods, taking long hikes in the quiet.
"most people will never experience this, because they don't get out there." {my dad}
...there's a whole world out there to adventure!...what are you waiting for? The world's at your feet! :)
Dad wanted to find some elk sheds and he managed to find two plus this elk skull, which this furry red dog enjoyed so much!
Saturday morning dad ventured off into the woods and we waited awhile for him to come back and start breakfast {he's the master campfire cook. Really he loves it, and when he does it, he's in his element}...time kept passing and we kept getting hungrier until finally, I could wait no longer. So I made the decision for us that we would start on breakfast...and what a breakfast it was. Olivia made peaches over the fire, Josiah fried the sausage, Trevor tended the fire and helped with the dutch oven, and I worked on apples, biscuits, and eggs. When dad returned he said he was holding out to see if we could survive without him.

One of the best parts of the trip was being able to read the Word of God in the great outdoors every morning by the fire.

{The Little House on the Back of the Truck} really only used for storing stuff in, and providing a place to sleep.

We did manage to do a little four-wheeler riding...which brought back loads of memories...
It was a grand trip, and I could go on, but I think I'll end there. If you want to know more about the camper full of smoke, or dad's experience with the game warden, I suppose you'll just have to ask me! :)
Looks like a really great time!
