CHAPTER 3-A closer look at Biblical friendships
1)Biblical friendship involves three aspects of life
Body,Soul,and Spirit
- Body-the physical part of you (1 Cor. 6:18-20).Once your saved, your body belongs to God.
- Soul-your mind,will,and emotions,A.K.A. your heart
- Spirit-you are a new man (Rom. 6:6).You were once a sinful creature who was sometimes able to do right. Now you are a righteous creature, who is sometimes able t do wrong.
What role do they (body, soul, and spirit) play in relationships?:
- Your body-God says to save this completely for marriage (2 Tim. 2:22,1 Cor. 6:18).
- Your soul-This is where you determine your values, your character, and your feelings. This is where you make choices!
- Your spirit-What God will use to guide you in all of life.Do you friendships help you grow closer to God and encourage you in your walk with Him?
2)Biblical Friendship involves time together
- Healthy, spiritual friendships develop the same way other friendships do-through time and attention-Pg. 28
- The more time you spend together and the more attention you give any friend (even when you are apart),the closer your friendship will become.-Pg. 28
- Too much makes it too serious,too emotional,too confusing.Too little makes it pointless.-Pg. 28
3)Biblical friendships do wholesome things together
- Godly people build their friendships in wholesome, pure, and Christ-honoring ways. We're talking about things like youth activities, church functions, and family outings.-Pg. 28-29
4)Biblical friendships have a purpose
- Biblical friendships are headed somewhere-they help you become a better person, and they compel you to go the right direction in life.-Pg. 29
Here are a few goals that should be the product of godly, encouraging friendships in your life:
1.To grow socially,emotionally,and spiritually
2.To become more like Christ
3.To help someone grow spiritually
4.To have an enjoyable time and make good memories
5.To learn to love others selflessly
6.To learn to communicate with the opposite gender
7.To learn how to treat someone of the opposite gender
8.To learn how to keep Christ first in your life
9.To learn how to guard your heart
10.To prepare you for the future
5)Biblical friendships have a good influence
- Choose to be interested in people who have godly character and a good direction in life.Choose to hang around someone you would like to become more like-someone who will help you be more like Christ.-Pg. 30
- God blesses those who honor authority (Eph. 6:3)
1.They have been where you are
2.They have been down the "marriage road"
3.They are wiser than you are
4.They care for your welfare
- God never intends for you to allow authority figure to take His place in your life or to allow them to lead in any direction that would go against His word or His laws.-Pg. 32
- Do your friends strengthen your heart for God or weaken it?Are you a better son, daughter, brother, sister because of your friends?do your friends help you respect your parents or tempt you to lie to them?Do your friends encourage you with spiritual talk, prayer, and uplifting attitudes?Or do they make you negative, ungrateful, cynical, and rebellious?Do you love God more or less because of their influence?-Pg. 32-33
- It's not about dating,it's about maturing.It's not about falling in love;it's about growing in grace.-Pg. 33
- Good friends make you a good person in every area.-Pg. 33
- God desires for you to learn from your friends and for them to learn from you.-Pg. 33
